Talk:Communications
the FRS addition
I'm not opposed to it, but FRS is not the only way to do radio. Two other alternatives are commercial shortwave radios, and mobile phones. I know that at one time Sprint offered unlimited minutes on person to person calls on weekends. I found out because an event I was at used ten or twenty of these for exactly that reason. Nearly free, reliable point to point comm, and you have the phones left over if you want them afterwards. Commercial shortwave is usually available in any decent sized city, and certainly would work well inside any reasonably sized convention center or hotel.
Really it depends on the money the Con has and how elaborate they are willing to go. FRS is useable and cheap and widely available, but as pointed out in the article, it does have drawbacks too. Being on a common channel with people you may not want listening is one big one. Plus theoretically you might be using a non-commercial band for commercial traffic. Depends on the circumstances. I seriously doubt it would ever become a real world problem. But someone might get picky about it and make a stink. You know what weenies Fans can be. especially when they think they need to prove a point. ;-) --ConRunnerAdmin 14:52, 13 July 2007 (PDT)
